Suomenlinna Vacation - A pictorial tour of
Suomenlinna.
Picturesque sights while on our Suomenlinna
vacation. It
takes a good two hours to see the same sights at
Suomenlinna as we did here. These are a collection of pictures taken at
and around Suomenlinna sea fortress.

Right after landing is the perfect time to get a map of Suomenlinna at
the Visitors center.

Our first
stop is the Toy Museum
| Before
entering the Toy Museum, Rosa is next to a wall. A display
of architectural style you see again and again at Suomenlinna. |

After our tour inside
the toy museum, the cafe and some pretty good looking candy. Similar to
candy canes.

We
walk around the outside of the
church and notice to our right...
|
...an elongated set of buildings to our right. The Bastion
Bielke Curtain structure. And...hungry Geese!

After feeding the geese we find a bench near the water... |

...to
sit down for a while. Our short Suomenlinna vacation includes
watching the blue shades of the air and sea of the Finnish coastline.

Then off we go toward direction sun on a...

minute walk...to our left --The Jetty Barracks -- Rantakasarmi |

Getting up closer to the Barracks a view of the tower.

According to our Suomenlinna map...walking through this passage...on
the other side of this arched tunnel, to the left will
be...the
SIWA -
Suomenlinna's food grocery store.
And sure enough...

Inside the SIWA food store. Besides general food and basic hardware
supplies. The food items are fresh and prices -Competitive.
The civilians love fresh veggies.

of water to see at Suomenlinna

After
our food break, we walk over
the bridge connecting us to the Naval academy side of Suomenlinna. Now
we are on the small black island called Small Black Island Pikkumustasaari.
This is where the naval academy is, and the Sea Mine museum.

At
Pikkumustasaari near the sand of the strand, at the end of the
afforementioned bridge - Tomi is relaxing while reading Donald Duck.
Helsinki coastline is in view where the merchant ship is top left of

to the right side of the bridge heading direction south, we see the Prisma ferry

At the
Suomenlinna fortress -- Water and Bridges -- This bridge connects us to
Wolf Island Susisaari.
Looking back, the church steeple is visible, behind us is Susisaari. We
notice a particular romantic area you can sit and do some sunbathing or
have a picnic...

Let us zoom up a bit on that previous picture...

Outdoor
lounge areas. A resting place for a romantic picnic or
just bathe in the sun.
After walking across the bridge we encounter
more fine stone masoned walls at Suomenlinna. On our mini
Suomenlinna vacation we see lot's of granite stone
carefully formed to ward off the enemy from entering the mainland.

architecture, retired sailors, military, etc...This is your treat. See
how to build defense wall with great skill, frost resilient, and nice
to look at.

Some tips
before visiting the Islands of Suomenlinna.
- Bring a flashlight, since there are
endless amounts of dark caves and tunnels to expore. Kid's will love it.
- You can travel to Suomenlinna for free
with a Helsinki City Transport ticket.
- Take enough warm clothes with along with
swimming gear for kids. With winds, temperatures vary more than inland.
- Guided "English" tours for children are
in the summer and can capture the interest of youngsters.
- Suomenlinna
is a miniature version of the Finnish Archipelago--
Where
there are thousands of islands. If you want to know what
the
Finnish Archipelago is like, visit Suomenlinna.
