Finns and Finnish public saunas

Wide angle view of the Kangasala sauna and swimming dock. The sauna building is wedged into the opposite side of the main road.Finnish Public Saunas are meant for heavy traffic. The Kangasala sauna and ice-swimming, near Tampere is not competitively as hot as the Rauhaniemi or Kaupinoja saunas, and more designed for families with children.

And... If you happen to be going to Kaukajärvi on your rowing/canoeing competition...try this Finnish public sauna after a hard row.
Take a closer look at the sauna and the entire dock area.

This Kangasala/Tampere sauna and swimming beach and ice-swimming sauna is less than 7 kilometers from Tampere city center.
In fact, you can catch a bus from Tampere city center to this bus stop. Ask the driver to let you off at the Kaukajarvi Finnish Public Sauna. See our Finnish Sauna map for where that Sauna is in Finland.

The dock is 20-30 meters walk from the sauna buildingAfter getting hot, walk out of the sauna room and you see this view of the long dock, a 2 meter diving platform, and plenty of water for swimming: A deep and shallow end for all swimming ages.

Now you find yourself on a flat gradual down-sloping stretch to the waters edge.Ideal for winter ice-swimming.

A Mix Of Natures Elements Creates a Birthplace for Finnish Public Saunas

Water at lake Kaukajärvi is clear with a slight yellow-greenish tint.
A sure sign of a good swim at a Finnish lake is by the quality of lake water. This water is clear, clean and healthy to swim in.
Take a closer look at the water- the sand on the lake bottom gives it a brownish backround..
Some lake water can be clean enough to drink!

People are swimming around the long wooden dock at this Finnish public sauna and swimming beach.
A man is standing waist high in water.Others are diving off the platform. The swimming beach gradually gets deeper. No sudden drop-offs.

Beach sand at lake Kaukajärvi. Sand grains are lighter brown, others darker in color.Sand granules are rough compared to beaches in U.S. or the Caribbean. Commonly seen Finnish beach sand has larger sand granule sizes than that of the Carribean or U.S. beaches. This more coarse sand washes off your feet faster than finer sand.

Swimming and standing up in the water is made easy, because there is sand as you walk into the deep end. No, worries, no slimy stuff to stand on at this beach.Take a look at this beach sand next to lake water at lake Kaukajärvi.

Inside Kangasala's sauna room.

Kangasala sauna room sauna stove front view. Large rectangular sauna stove with new stones.A wooden fence is surrounding the stove. This sauna room was carefully built to meet strict "Finnish Sauna" construction rules. The real test is:How good is the steam it manufactures?

Good steam (hyvät löylyt) requires sauna room temperatures to stay constant or even rise after throwing water onto the sauna stove rocks.-Experienced sauna visitors await in anticipation, for high quality heat waves, after the water is poured onto the sauna stove.-

Of course the hotter the inside temps get after water is poured on the better quality steam produced.
Take a closer look at the sauna stove.

Let us say that a sauna room's temperature before throwing water is 100 Celcius.

Now get a good ladle full of water and pour it on the hot stones.Wait!!Now check the thermometer...

100 Celcius We'll that is so so steam!
110 Celcius Ok..good steam
125 Celcius Now we're talking!! That is almost a real Finnish sauna!!

While BAD steam (Huonot Löylyt), caused by many factors, including aging sauna stones, equals to sauna room temperature dropping from 100 to 70 Celcius. !!SNIFF!!

What a downer that is, just when your body expects a heat rush, all of a sudden you feel cooled, in a lifeless sauna room, It's as if your sauna neighbor, while you were not looking, threw a wet lukewarm towel on top of your whole body.

Sauna benches are replaced often in Finnish public saunas.Underneath the benches are small Italian blue tiles used as a backround design
Finnish public sauna benches are replaced after much use. Benches become worn out, cracked, tinted dark brown and start smelling. These sauna benches at the Kangasala, Kaukajärvi sauna are new.The small 1 by 1 inch tiles are fitting for the backround.Take a look at these benches.
